Music Event: LATE NIGHT @ ESPLANADE with MATHILDA D'SILVA
Date: Friday, January 29, 2010
Time: 9:30pm - 10:30pm
Location: ESPLANADE RECITAL STUDIO
Mathilda D'silva has been performing since she can remember. As a child it was impossible to get her to sit still, she was often lost at parties, only to be found in front of an audience, singing with the boom box and entertaining.
Starting out as a drummer for rock bands, she eventually found her way to the microphone (mainly due to the fact that she couldn't sustain on the double pedal) and hasn’t left that position since. Since her debut as a finalist on Singapore Idol to one of Singapore’s budding multi-lingual artistes, Mathilda is known as the “Voice”.
Her lack of formal training is no impediment to her talent as she feels music should be an unprocessed expression of inner craving. She travels all over Asia performing in a broad range of genre’s- jazz, R&B, funk, opera, hip hop, mandopop, the list goes on.
This year Mathilda is showcasing her talent as a song-writer, having showcased her work last year in Mediacorp’s Project Hope and by proposing a song for the Youth Olympics.
This performance is a celebration of Mathilda’s roots…Rhythm and Blues. From her drumsticks to her unmistakable wail, Mathilda has the innate ability to channel pure raw emotion into any lyric or melodic line. Beginning with Blind Willie Johnson’s seminal “Dark was the Night, Cold was the Ground”, the show celebrates artistes like Erykah Badu, Chaka Khan, Willie Hutch and many more. Mathilda traverses the waters of the African American music genre and shares her latest original compositions for the first time.
