Corrinne May Newsletter - November 21st 2008 (Asia)

Hey guys,

In my past blog post, I promised that news of our international Singaporean song-writer Corrinne May will be posted up here if u guys have been following faithfully to my blog. Anyway Kavin Hoohas (Corrinne May's husband and music producer) have just released his first solo instrumental album 'A Moment in Time' and Corrinne is featured as a singer in some of his songs. A great peaceful tune in one of Kavin's tracks "Forever Yours" (free download in his website...read Corrinne May's newsletter below to find out where to download). She also co-wrote a song " Stranger" for 'It's My Life' musical concert in Nov 08 - Dec 08. Interested parties can buy tixs for the musical here.

Without further ado, here's the latest newsletter from Corrinne May:

Dear friends,

It's been a little while since we last spoke and I wanted to just write a little note to update you on what I've been up to. Some of you have wondered if I am going to be back in Singapore for a concert any time soon. Well, I'd love to, hopefully, sometime next year. I'm also working on getting a book of piano scores to my songs done.

In the meantime, I wanted to share with you some new music that I've been a part of. For the past few months, my music producer and husband Kavin Hoohas been working on his newest solo instrumental album, 'A Moment in Time'.

For those of you familiar with Kavin's music, you'll know that it's the type of music that reaches really deep into one's soul and tugs at the heartstrings. It's the type of music that makes my heart soar. It's piano instrumental music at its very best.

Kavin's previous 9 albums, have done very well at the American-based Target Stores nationwide, under the COMPASS records label. This newest album, titled 'A Moment in Time' is his first album for our record label Pink Armchair Records and we're both excited to share it with you.

I'm honoured that Kavin asked me to sing on five of the songs on his album. You can hear samples from the record, including two of the songs featuring my vocals 'Pilgrim's Journey' and 'The Winding Path' and even download a free song at
http://www.kavinhoo.com/AMIT/AMIT.htm

For our friends in Singapore, the album is being released by Warner Music Singapore and you can now find the album for sale at all good music stores in Singapore :) For our friends in other countries, The album is now available for pre-order at a special price at
http://www.pinkarmchair.com/flash/kavin/AMIT/albumamit.htm
And yes, we do ship to every part of the world.

I think the music on this record is the perfect soundtrack for this Autumn season of reflection and introspection and I hope you'll agree :) (it also makes a great stocking stuffer)
My personal favourites on this album are the sweet strains of 'Hush Little Baby'and the very touching 'Miracle of Life'. Also listen to 'Revelations'. Very evocative, emotional, visually-rich music.

The other piece of news for those of you in Singapore, is that I've recently co-written a song titled 'Stranger' for the 'It's My Life' musical which opens in Singapore at the NUS University Cultural Centre from the 27th Nov. to the 7th of December. It's a very meaningful musical and I'm honoured to be able to contribute a song for it. Read more about the musical at this link
http://www.itsmylife.sg/itsmylife/

Thanks for listening :) And I'll update you on more news soon.
Hugs,Corrinne.

THE AMPS Concert featuring local songwriters of the theme song in our famous local movie "881" - 28 Nov 08

Hey guys

remember our local hit movie 881? It was a really touching movie to me especially on the part where one of the sister was losing her hair due to cancer. I am sure that u guys will have a faint impression of the theme song...it makes me remind of the Chinese lyrics in the song which can be translated into Singlish "each person get half of the pie...feelings won't spilt"...lol. Anyway the song-writers who wrote this theme song will be performing in Esplanade this coming Friday 28 Nov08. So do catch them.

News featured below from Esplanade:

Dreamed up by well-known homegrown producer/songwriter/guitarist Eric Ng and made up of members who are individually established music-makers, The AMPs is a bilingual collective that delivers uniquely re-interpreted English pub favourites and Mandarin chart-toppers from the likes of Jolin Tsai, A*Mei and Tanya Chua, in addition to their self-penned originals such as the theme song for Channel 8 drama serial The Defining Moment, as well as their contributions to hit movies 881 and 12 Lotus.

The AMPS are Eric, charismatic singer/songwriter Ngak, backing duo Clement Yang Xi and Brandon Khoo, regular hard-rocking performers at Hard Rock Café, Wala Wala and Timbre, and ex-Dreamz FM member and singer-songwriter Jim Lim who has toured with superstars such as Lee Hom (Wang Li Hong), JJ Lin Junjie and A*Mei for their worldwide concerts.

Personal Thoughts on DJing music?

Hey guys,

I am really happy to see that more Singaporeans are helping local musicians in Singapore. Recently I just went for Denon DJ workshop in Republic Polytechnic. It was really an eye-opener to see our one and only Denon Ambassador Brand DJ Razaq and his fellow helper DJ Timo (Resident DJ of DLBo) giving us an introduction to DJing workshop. I must say that I had a lot of fun doing scratching and pressing the buttons on the latest Denon DJ equipment to "mis-mix" the groovy hip-hop sounds....Yo Yo...to House Music. To some, u might not consider DJs as musicians. But I think as long as they are producing or composing music, I feel that DJ are also musicians.

Coming back to DJing, I have heard of bad DJs mixing music. It totally sucks. Can u imagine that u are dancing half-way through the music when there is an abrupt change of music from the first sound track to the next sound track??? It totally kills the mood!!! Maybe...that's one of the factors why one of our famous local clubs closed down recently in Singapore. Alrite I am not going to name the club. U guys should know. And I am going to kill the next DJ who don't mix properly (just joking). DJs out there...pls learn to mix the appropriate tempo and chords between different tracks properly to avoid scaring customers like us away.

For inspiring DJ wanna-babes and hunks, U really have to work yr way up into the DJ industry even if u have the talent. DJ Razaq and DJ Timo had their ups and downs too. I really respect Razaq for his sheer determination. He actually self-taught himself and went to watch how DJs were doing all those mixing & scratching where DJing was considered as a secret music skill-trade market among DJs back in the old days. DJ Razaq also teaches his own personal DJ mentoring course (for a few years) to inspiring DJs. What's the difference??? U actually have OJT (on-job-training) with DJs in local clubs!!! Such invaluable experience...where can u find???

Razaq is such a busy guy who goes around touring and DJing in various famous clubs in the world. If u guys are waiting for Razaq to start the DJ course, u will have to wait for a while. Those interested for the course, just email me. Who knows??? If the response is so good, he might consider starting the course earlier. In the meantime, I will keep u guys updated if he is ready to launch his next session in DJ mentoring course.

It's also heart-warming to see our DJ Razaq (who is also the Group Entertainment Manager of The Emerald Hill Group Pte Ltd) searching for young music talents to play in one of the new outlets in his company. I have recommended D'Fusion (a local music-duo band who I met in the Songcraft Songwriting Circle gathering) to him. Hope that this news will inspire more musicians to improve themselves in Singapore.

If u guys have any local or international news about our local musicians or upcoming local music events or any venues which promote Singapore Music, contact me via email or leave me a msg in my tagbox. Singapore Musicians...u guys are also welcome to send me news or happenings about your latest album launch, events or anything related to music in my blog.

Email: wjvocalist@yahoo.com.sg

Do come back soon to watch out for the upcoming news on our international song-writer Corrinne May.

If u guys are wondering who's the people in the picture on top: It's DJ Timo (Left), Me (Center) & DJ Razaq (Right).

Signing off
Yr dearest Music Blogger

Do come back and check out the video of a live music performance under TCS TV channel 8 by our very own local singer songwriter Sean in my upcoming future blog post. Apparently he was featured and nominated as one of the artist entries for "BEST LOCAL ARTISTE" in Singapore Hit Awards back in 2002.

Now it's time for u guys to read some news on music. Credit goes to MediaCorp Radio Network for the information provided below (Source: http://www.mediacorpradio.sg/)

anugeraHitz.sg - Hitz the Local Malay Music Industry

It is particularly heartening to see that our Singaporean music composers and musicians especially our fellow Malay ethnic group slowly getting recognition by the local media in Singapore. For me, I find that the main focus on the local music industry in Singapore seems to be focussing on Mandarin Pop music. Such occurance on this particular music genre could be due to the major Chinese population staying here. It's not that I find Mandarin Pop music is bad. It's just that I wish that more variety of music genres (jazz, r&b, hip-hop, xin yao, film etc) composed by our own Singaporean music composers could get more airplay in the local radio.

Mind...u...guys. I am also a Chinese if anyone thinks that I am against Mandarin Pop music. Anyway the information below features the collaboration of Composers and Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS) and MediaCorp in setting up an award show for the local Malay music industry.(Source from COMPASS website: http://www.compass.org.sg)

Hitz the Local Malay Music Industry

Singapore, 11 November 2008 – Composers and Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS), MediaCorp Suria, MediaCorp Radio Warna and Ria, and today announce their first collaboration in the production of anugeraHitz.sg, an awards show that honours the best in the local Malay music industry.

The inaugural awards show also recognises and celebrates the contributions made by the talents to the Malay music industry. Local and international viewers can view the ‘LIVE’ show on Suria and via web streaming at anugeraHitz.sg. Radio listeners can also catch the ‘LIVE’ simulcast on Warna 94.2FM and Ria 89.7FM. The event will be held at MediaCorp TV Theatre on Friday, 3 April 2009 at 8.30pm.

Senior Vice President of Suria Network Programming and Promotions and Eaglevision Production, Mr. Suhaimi Jais says, "Since its launch in 2000, Suria has produced and discovered many local talents, including those in the music field. Suria has always been one of the main platforms for the artistes, composers and musicians to have the opportunity to showcase their talents. The strong cohesion between TV and Radio has garnered the support of more than 240,000 viewers for Anugerah Planet Muzik (APM). We hope to garner the same support for anugeraHitz.sg. Today's partnership with COMPASS is an extension of Suria's commitment to help nurture these talents to their fullest potential. At the same time, our effort will acknowledge the contributions they have made to the industry and community."

Echoing the views, Dr Edmund Lam, Chief Executive Officer and Director of COMPASS adds, “COMPASS is pleased to work together with MediaCorp on anugeraHitz.sg. These awards aim to recognize music, recording artistes and album producers who have excelled. We have seen a revival of the local music industry in Singapore in recent years with the strong support given by the media, especially by Suria, Warna and Ria. They have been critical and indispensable vehicles to promote local music. This encouraging situation is also attributed to the nurturing and promotional efforts of PERKAMUS over the years.”

"Our Malay radio stations, Warna 94.2FM and Ria 89.7FM, have always supported local talents. We introduced Anugerah Planet Muzik (APM) in 2001 as a platform to showcase the best in the Malay Music industry in this region. The Singapore segment has always been an integral part of the event. We are very excited about 'anugerahHitz.sg', an awards show that celebrates and recognizes talented local artistes and music professionals. We hope that this event will be a milestone in the Malay music industry. We look forward to the support of all artistes and music fans here in Singapore and the region", said Ms Zakiah Halim, Vice President of Malay, Indian and Community Programming, Radio Division.

There has been strong support and demand for local music in recent years. Local songs and artistes are regularly featured in the weekly popular charts indicating strong support and love from Singaporeans. It is also a testimony to the immense creative talent in the pool of Malay music professionals.

A total of 10 award categories will be presented during anugeraHitz.sg:

Next Gen Rockers Talentime Camp in SP - Dec 08

Hey guys,

Looking for a music camp to learn music skills to play in a band, watch band performances and even get free food, jamming in the month of Dec08 when u know it's going to be boring to stay at home during the holidays??? Well below is some information for a music camp catering to the public in Singapore Polytechnic:

p/s: Pls note that in the email below, the sender's email and contact no is masked to protect the individual's privacy.

From: peiling yan Subject: Next Gen Rockers Talentime Camp in SP
To: wjvocalist@yahoo.com.sg Date: Saturday, 8 November, 2008, 3:09 PM

Hi,
I am PeiLing from Singapore Polytechnic. I am organising a music day camp in SP from 9-13 Dec.It is a camp targetted at rock/pop bands or aspiring band members. You will get to visit recording studios, talk to experienced bands, learn performing skills that you might not be able to learn outside, and also experience a talentime at the end of the camp!
I've attached a brochure and poster below for more information.
I believe that it's a definitely worth it experience! Bands like
West Grand Boulevard and King Kong Jane are also playing live on the last day.
We are collaborating with the concert "In Rock We Trust", thus loads of other bands will be appearing too! Participants can also get to watch bands soundcheck as well as talk to the bands!

Not forgetting that participants can learn how to play as a band and also have their own talentime experience on the 2nd last day!

You also get to watch the bands soundcheck, something you'll never get to see at concerts!
If you're finding it expensive, let me give you a few reason why it's worth it:

1. The cost of inviting bands to perform and share experience.

2. You get to experience and visit studios in Singapore Polytechnic which is very updated in Singapore. Our studios cost millions of dollars.

3. You get jamming time!

4. We provide lunch and dinner!

5. And if you compare it to outside courses, it is comparatively cheap for what we offer. Just 4 times a week lessons (eg. vocal, piano, guitar), which accounts to 4 hours, cost more than 100 bucks.

You can either contact me, give me a call or an sms at ------- or you could reply my email. :)
ps. It would be appreciated if you could pass the news around and post it up on your blog.

Cheers!
Regards,
PeiLing

Get your adrenaline pumping with two hours of high-octane music performances by Noise Singapore musicians. The first of two electrifying performances, catch this year’s Noise Apprentices EN-X, as well as past Noise Apprenticeship musicians Richard J, S.P.O.N.G.E and Quasimodo as they bring the house down.

When: 08 Nov 2008, 6 – 8pm

Where: Cathay Cineleisure Orchard

About EN-X
EN-X (pronounced an – ex) which is short for Entity X, is an entity embodied by members from different walks of life, coming together to bring about something even greater than its individual parts; The X symbolizing the reconciliation of the heart and mind, the outer self and inner self, and faith and the soul (as seen by the two lines intersecting at a point).

About Quasimodo
We like jangly guitars, sad singer-songwriters, tambourines, doe-eyed pretty girls, jazz standards, 60's girl groups, dancing till dawn, love songs, Jens Lekman, Botanic Gardens on sunday mornings, Fort Canning Park on weekday evenings, Edith Piaf, Britpop, Audrey Tautou, hyperactive toddlers, hobos with harmonicas, group hugs, behaving like girls at gigs, cult comic books, Noam Chomsky, staying up late the night before recording sessions and falling asleep during recording sessions.

About Richard J
Richard J, born Richard Mark Jansen on August 21, 1989 is Singapore youngest talent extraordinaire to perform in Top Dawg Party twice. Richard J started composing music at the age of 12 and inspired by artistes such as Lil Wayne, Bow Wow, he then moved on to create a style of his own. He began performing at the age of 15, joining street competitions/ Battles, and in 2005, he joined his first Rap Battle as a soloist and came out victorious. With a brand new LP in the works scheduled to release in 2008, this young extraordinaire has so much more to give.

About S.P.O.N.G.E
No strangers to the local scene, S.P.O.N.G.E. has performed at Suntec City, the Esplanade, HMV, and in 2007, they were one of the few bands chosen to be part of Noise Singapore’s The Apprenticeship Programme (TAP) under the tutelage of Nick Chan of Astreal and MUON fame. S.P.O.N.G.E. was set up in 2006, and after settling into the band’s current lineup, they have grown into their unique sound by utilizing elements from a vast range of influences. The band defies traditional genres of music with atmospheric lead melodies, a driving rhythm backbone and powerful vocals. S.P.O.N.G.E.
